Born in Calcutta, India, John grew up in Mexico City, graduated from the University of Colorado and the University of Denver Law School, and has been an attorney in Colorado since the early 70’s. Starting out as corporate antitrust counsel for IBM in New York, he soon opted to return to Denver to enter private practice. Subsequently, with several partners, he opened his own law firm in Steamboat Springs where he practiced for the next 14 years. From 1989 through early 1995 he worked with Holme Roberts & Owen, a major Denver law firm, representing U.S. business clients with interests in Mexico and throughout Latin America. Upon Mexico’s collapse in early 1995, he returned to private practice in Steamboat with a highly diverse clientele. In 1996, he completed extensive mediation training at the Center for Dispute Resolution in Boulder, and has successfully mediated a number of complex cases, including ones where his bilingual/bicultural background has proven essential. He has been on the roster of the AAA International Roster of Mediators and Arbitrators and has been on the “2022 Committee”—set up pursuant to section 2022 of NAFTA to arbitrate and mediate cross-border commercial disputes. He has taught U.S.-Mexico Relations at the University of Colorado and Colorado Mountain College, been a frequent guest lecturer and seminar speaker, and written over a dozen columns and articles for The Denver Post, primarily on U.S.-Mexico issues.
